History of Charlotte

The City of Charlotte and the southern Piedmont region of North Carolina have a storied history. Quintessential as an example of a dynamic New South region, greater Charlotte has grown from a pre-Revolutionary War trading center into a textiles and furniture manufacturing hub, and now into a financial services, health care and energy capital. UNC Charlotte, North Carolina’s urban research university, has staked its claim as a keeper of the region’s history. For photographs and other archival materials tracing Charlotte’s ascendance, use the Digital Collection of UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library.
